NC Baptist worship leader, Bryan Foster, recently interviewed me for his podcast: Ministry Focus–Worship Essentials to discuss the new Healthy Worship project. In part one of this season finale, we discuss why the church needs a clearer, more biblical vision of worship. Together, we unpack practical and theological questions about worship, participation, and how believers can live out worship from Monday through Sunday.
I had a blast talking with Bryan — he has a way of putting people at ease. The interview was lengthy, so Bryan has divided the discussion into two episodes. Check out last week’s edition before diving into this one.

Part 2 of the season finale of the Ministry Focus – Worship Essentials podcast
Part 2 of my conversation with Kenny Lamm, Worship Strategist with the N.C. Baptist State Convention concerning his new project, “Healthy Worship.”
Show notes
In this episode, host Bryan Foster continues his vital conversation with Kenny Lamm, the worship strategist for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, about his new book and initiative, Healthy Worship. Building on the foundations laid in Part One, this episode dives deeper into the heart of worship styles, the pitfalls of generational division, and how to put a missionary mindset into practice within your local congregation.
Key Discussion Points:
-
Keeping Christ at the Center of Special Services: A continuation from last week’s discussion, Kenny shares why worship leaders must keep Christ as the absolute focal point during high-emotion days like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or Christmas. While it is wonderful to celebrate these occasions, every service must ultimately revolve around and point back to Jesus.
-
Why Worship Styles Carry So Much Emotional Weight: Kenny explains why changes in musical style can evoke such deep emotional responses, noting that worship songs are often deeply intertwined with highly personal spiritual milestones, salvation experiences, and seasons of grief or family loss. When the music changes, people can feel as though their personal stories or places in the church are being erased.
-
Adopting a “Missionary Mindset”: Moving away from the “Worship Wars,” Kenny challenges churches to adopt a missionary mindset. This means holding tightly to biblical truth while remaining highly flexible with musical forms and preferences. He cautions that if a specific musical preference becomes a hill to die on, it has officially transitioned from being a tool into becoming an idol.
-
Moving Beyond “Blended” to “Unified” Worship: Kenny expands on why “blended” worship—often a programmatic compromise where half the songs cater to one generation and half to another—frequently leaves everyone dissatisfied. He contrasts this with Unified Intergenerational Worship, which brings all ages and backgrounds together into one room to offer a living preview of Revelation 7:9.
-
Pastoral Advice for Changing Congregations:
-
To the Older Generation: Kenny gently invites mature believers to view themselves as spiritual parents or grandparents who are willing to lay aside personal stylistic preferences so the next generation can encounter the gospel in a language that connects with them.
-
To the Younger Generation: Kenny encourages younger believers to practice humility and respect for the rich theology found in older hymns and traditions, cautioning against sacrificing the wisdom of spiritual mothers and fathers for the sake of modern “coolness”.
-
-
Worship as a Sending Tool: The conversation concludes by highlighting that a healthy corporate worship service shouldn’t end at the benediction. True biblical worship models an encounter with God that purifies the believer and sends them back out into the world as everyday missionaries in their workplaces, schools, and communities.
How to Use This Book in Your Church:
Kenny purposefully designed Healthy Worship as an accessible, 10-chapter format tailored for regular church members rather than just formal worship scholars. It is ideally formatted for an 11-week study rhythm (covering the chapters and the extensive afterward).
Churches can utilize this material via:
-
Small Groups or Sunday School Classes: Partnering the book with the forthcoming free, downloadable 5-part video series.
-
A “Healthy Worship Weekend”: A focused church-wide retreat or conference to launch a culture change in how your congregation views worship.
