I am 85 years old. Playing music in church since high school. Played organ 25 years at baptist church. Moved another city played organ again baptist church. Had cancer couldn’t play for while new song leader got rid organ went to drums guitars. I feel what I played god was in it for people to feel god in service. Music was too loud for building. Left church went another church then a pastor wife called me play piano traditional music at her baptist church. Been playing quite few years now. Song leader Left a lady now trying leadcallvwants sing choruses. Plays at least 2 videos in service really loud sorta country contemporary music. Been so unhappy. Also no pastor now a man is now preaching
He is more a motivational speaker than preacher. Thinking leaving to another church. Want to do God’s will but maybe Been in church too long even since childhood. I was saved in 1946. Playing offertory play songs to glorify god and hopefully speak to congregation.
I was also raised as a Baptist and used to sing duets with my sister (and sometimes solos) at special events ie Easter, Whitsun, Christmas and Harvest. I later became deaf when I was about 12 years old and am now in my 70s. As I can no longer follow a church service or hear the hymns I stopped going a long time ago and turned to “Songs of Praise”. However, I find there are too many celebrities showcasing their own singing and, from my own lipreading, I also see that a lot of the hymns I know seem to have been re-arranged, so that I can no longer follow them and sing the music I remember from the past. The Christmas service, especially, has become a great disappointment as there aren’t enough carols being sung with familiar music and arrangements (especially from ‘Carols from Kings) where the congregation can join in. I’ve just been watching this year’s service on TV and only recognise about 3 and I’m sure one of them has been re-arranged (I think it was “The Holly and the Ivy). The rest are all sung by the choir with their own high-church hymns – it’s hardly a reminder of the birth of Jesus. You don’t even get much emotion shown by the vicar, or whoever is taking the service when a lesson is being read. Very boring and I’m very tempted to stop watching in future years – I stopped watching “Songs of Praise” about six months ago, as I don’t know any of the new hymns at all.
I am a member of the Praise Team. I grew up in a Baptist Church. My Father was a Pastor. I’m used to worshiping, lifting hands, playing a tambourine, really enjoying worship. When the preacher preaches saying Amen. Just allowing God to use me. Participating in all aspects of the service. Church now, does not. They are quiet. I don’t want to quench the spirit. Some have said we are Baptist. I know lots of Baptist that worship. What should I do?
What we think doesn’t really matter. We need to study music and see how does God view this issue. I fear we are often asking God to conform to our prefrences, because we are unwilling to conform to His. I think we all will be amazed at how different music will be in heaven and how much like the world we have become.
It really doesn’t make a difference what style or the type of music, if the Holy Spirit is not in it, you might as well go home. If the congregation worships G-d in spirit and truth then, G-d will show up and after all, that’s what we really want isn’t it?
I prefer to mix both old hymns (even with a modern sound) and also the latest songs. By that I believe I can reach both the old people and the youths in our church. As for the incense and lava lamps etc I like to keep P&W on a spiritual level and try not to use things that can distract the audience.
As when giving a concert, now that is something else. During a concert you are allowed to put on stage what ever you like.
